Joshua Hertel

Joshua Hertel joined UNC Charlotte in 2011.  He currently serves as the Director of the School of Data Science, overseeing day-to-day operations for both graduate and undergraduate academic programs as well as community and industry engagement with the School of Data Science. In his role, he supervises the School’s communications and advising teams. Joshua coordinates the communications and marketing plan as well as the School’s comprehensive recruitment, retention, and placement strategy.  Joshua leads engagement with the SDS community and business partners by identifying opportunities for collaboration and student placement.     

Before his current role, Joshua served as the Director of the Graduate Center at UNC Charlotte. During this time, he spearheaded recruiting and hosted academic programs from partner institutions across North Carolina, managing transdisciplinary initiatives and facilitating distance education graduate programs. Before joining the University, Joshua taught for almost 20 years in public secondary education. Joshua earned his Master of Arts in Liberal Studies from Georgetown University.
