Leading with Purpose, Learning with Passion: Emilia’s Impact at UNC Charlotte

For Emilia Gabriela Olivera Hernández, choosing UNC Charlotte was more than a practical decision — it was a meaningful one. A first-generation college student from Concord, North Carolina, Emilia knew that staying close to home would allow her to remain rooted in the support of her family while stepping into an entirely new world of academic and personal growth.

“I needed a place that would challenge me academically but also allow me to stay grounded in my roots,” she reflects. “What I didn’t expect was how much I would grow here.”

Now nearing graduation, Emilia has built a legacy defined by curiosity, mentorship, and purpose-driven work. A Data Science major with a minor in Political Science, she has been deeply involved across campus — from leadership roles in the Latinx Student Union to research initiatives and meaningful community engagement.

A Passion for Data and Impact

Emilia’s interest in Data Science began with a simple love for asking “why.” As she explored the field, she discovered its incredible range — from social justice to sports analytics — and saw how data could be a powerful tool to drive change.

“It clicked during one of my early classes — data can tell stories, influence decisions, and make a real impact,” she says. “I didn’t want to just study data; I wanted to use it to make a difference.”

One pivotal moment in Emilia’s academic journey came through a course with Professor Tobias, whose dynamic teaching and real-world experiences in sports analytics opened new possibilities. “He believed in me when I wasn’t sure I belonged in that space,” Emilia recalls. “His mentorship led me to pursue the Sports Analytics Certificate and gave me the confidence to grow in unexpected ways.”

From Campus to Community

Outside the classroom, Emilia’s journey has been grounded in service. She currently works as an Evaluation Coordinator with ourBRIDGE for KIDS, a nonprofit supporting immigrant and refugee youth in Charlotte — a role that has connected her professional goals with her personal values.

“It’s not just about numbers; it’s about impact,” she shares. “Using data to support communities I deeply connect with has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my life.”

Her involvement doesn’t stop there. Emilia has served as Logistics Chair and Program Consultant for the Latinx Student Union, helped improve officer transitions through feedback and resources, participated in ALPFA for leadership and career development, and conducted undergraduate research with the Cato College of Education.

These diverse experiences have shaped Emilia into a leader who values not only knowledge but also heart — someone who uplifts others as she climbs.

Looking Ahead

Emilia just graduated in May 2025, but her next chapter has already begun. She recently accepted a full-time offer at Ally Bank as an Early Talent Associate, where she’ll bring her data science background and community-minded values to the financial sector.

“What excites me most is continuing to show up as myself and proving there’s room for people like me in tech and data,” she says. “I want to keep learning, keep challenging myself, and find ways to give back.”

As she reflects on her journey, Emilia offers advice to incoming students:

“Give yourself permission to take up space. You deserve to be here. Don’t let imposter syndrome talk you out of opportunities. Apply for the internship. Go to the networking event. Raise your hand in class. Some of the best parts of my college journey came from moments when I pushed through self-doubt.”

A Legacy of Mentorship and Representation

For Emilia, mentorship has been both a gift received and one she’s passionate about paying forward. From guiding first-year students to representing her identities as a first-gen Latina woman in data science, she hopes her presence inspires others to see what’s possible.

“My story is still being written,” she says, “but I’m walking into the next chapter with a full heart and a strong sense of purpose.”
